Carolyn Denny Story
A simple laptop computer…for many of us, it’s just a means to an end. A way to get some work done at home, an outlet to keep up on the latest headlines or a gadget to play a game. But for 65 year-old Carolyn Denny, this simple laptop is a lifeline.
“This laptop has just been wonderful for me to have to keep in touch with all of my eight grandchildren. My daughter-in-law e-mails me quite a bit and it’s neat to receive my grandchildren’s first little letters. It’s not only with the e-mailing of the letters, but if I miss the news or something else that I’ve heard about recently that I’m interested in, I can just look it up on the computer. It’s just amazing to me how much you can find in this little box.” Carolyn Denny said.
You can only imagine the heartache Carolyn suffered when her lifeline went OFFline. The laptop was stolen and she felt violated and a little unsafe. It broke all of our hearts, including Mrs. Denny’s, to know that someone had violated her personal space and her personal belongings.

Carolyn said, “I can’t get over the fact that someone would have the nerve to go into an old lady’s room and take her things. He could see that I have very little. I couldn’t believe something like this would ever happen to me.”
Employees here at the Danish Care Center know all too well how the elderly can be easy prey for thieves. That’s why, in addition to local police, they have a powerful ally in their corner when it comes to protecting their residents; the Senior Crimestoppers program.
First thing on Monday morning, the administrator placed a call to Senior Crimestoppers and the incident was reported. Senior Crimestoppers faxed a reward poster right over and started getting calls immediately…calls that led to an arrest. A new employee at the Danish Care Center was immediately terminated. Even though the Center has a strict screening process when hiring, unfortunate incidents can take place. Senior Crimestoppers is there during those difficult times and generous support from our financial partners makes this kind of help and response possible. In this case, Rabobank, which sponsors this facility, made it possible for Senior Crimestoppers to put up the reward money that led to Carolyn’s family connection being restored
Dan Snowden, Regional Senior Vice President with Rabobank, who sponsors the crime prevention program in the Danish Care Center, “Well, it makes me feel good. I mean it really shows that Senior Crimestoppers is working and for Rabobank to actually have a part in that makes us all feel good. I would highly recommend Senior Crimestoppers because it really does make you a wonderful and outstanding corporate citizen. But on a personal level, you’re helping to enhance the lives of people in your community.”
And talk about return on investment…for Carolyn to see her lifeline returned was joy beyond compare and she thanked everybody for doing such a wonderful job!! She was so grateful and thankful she was given her laptop back. A laptop that she thought she was going to lose. In terms of appreciation from the heart, you can’t buy that with money. To be able to affect people’s lives in that way is really outstanding.
Transforming Lives
With the support of our partners, the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation transforms the lives of vulnerable nursing home residents. It is hard to overstate the transformative effect a bank can have on the life of an elderly person by removing fear from their lives — fear of neglect, fear of theft, fear of needing equipment and not knowing where to turn.
